ISO 22000:2018

ISO 22000 is the globally recognised standard for food safety management. Having certification to the standard demonstrates a company’s ability to identify and control food safety hazards. It’s important to have internationally recognised food safety standards as a lot of today’s food will be transported from country to country.

This standard is also currently in a period of transition, within which businesses with certification to previous versions must meet the new and updated requirements set out in the latest version. The 2018 version of the standard has added a greater robustness to planning and strategy in some businesses, and can often be combined with compliance with other standards by making it part of a company system.

Acquiring the certification from an Accredited Certification Body should be relatively easy once you have put things in place. As with other standards, the smoothest projects occur when the senior management is fully involved and committed. It is also advisable that you have or acquire expertise to help.

British Retail Consortium (BRC)

In the UK, you are more likely to be asked to comply with British Retail Consortium (BRC) standards. There are several of these out there including food safety, packaging, storage and distribution, agents and brokers, consumer products and retail.

Certification to BRC standards demonstrates a high level of quality and safety, and ensures manufacturers fulfil their legal obligations and provide protection for the end consumer. Certification is issued through a global network of accredited certification bodies.
