Business continuity plans are essential to safeguard your business. It is well established by examples that most businesses without a plan do not survive a major incident. Often these are Black Swans or unknown unknowns.

ISO 22301

ISO 22301:2012 provides a framework to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain and continually improve a business continuity management system (BCMS). It is expected to help organizations protect against, prepare for, respond to and recover from disruptive incidents should they arise.

This standard is currently undergoing a review, so that it can be upgraded to meet the requirements for all management systems standards (AnnexSL).

Acquiring the certification from an Accredited Certification Body should be relatively easy once you have put things in place. The smoothest projects occur when senior management is fully committed. It is also advisable that you have or acquire expertise to help. There are many Accredited Certification Bodies out there, not just BSi.

Often you can combine this with compliance with other standards by making it part of the company system. This reduces the costs of surveillance.
